Is SEO The Key To Making It Big On Spotify?

Another week, another nifty use of SEO. While we usually think of algorithms, playlists and new releases as the key influences on our streaming habits, a new player has entered the game - SEO.

How Does It Work?

Spotify is home to millions of options for great music, it’s also home to generic ‘artists’ who upload audio ranging from sound effects to nature sounds. Think ‘Calming Rainforest Sounds’, ‘Water Sound Natural White Noise’, etc. - generic usernames that are creating and uploading audio to the platform. A simple Spotify search reveals hundreds of artist profiles named after generic search terms and even genre names.

You might not think that your evening rain sounds playlists will impact how we stream music that much, but these accounts are racking up major numbers, with some clocking up millions of spins on their ‘songs’ and gaining hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners - becoming major players in the game of streaming.

What Does All This Mean?

And as we all know, mass spins equal financial gain. While you probably can’t name too many of the artists behind our favourite calming rain sounds or natural white noise playlists, these users have found a way to ensure streaming numbers, thus increasing the likelihood of monetising their uploads.

It’s all within Spotify’s rules as well, so we may just see more artists adopting an SEO approach to deliver their own music into the ears of new listeners.
