A Look At Unique Artist Giveaways
If you’ve read a few editions of The Habit Weekly, you’d know that we have a soft spot for covering imaginative campaigns. This week is no exception - today we’re digging into some of the most exciting prizes that artists have awarded to their fans.
Hope D’s Tattoo
Ahead of the release of her ‘Happy Hangover’ single, Brisbane indie rock artist Hope D gave her fans a chance to pick her next tattoo. Listeners could enter the competition by pre-saving the upcoming single, and sending Hope a screenshot via social media. Fans could join in on the fun (less permanently) with the ‘Happy Hangover’ merch, which included temporary tattoos. The next month, Hope shared the big day and her new tattoo with her followers. It was a lot of faith to put into the winner, but Hope's fans loved the campaign.
One Direction’s Car
In 2015, One Direction teamed up with their tour sponsor Honda for the Honda Civic Design Contest. Directioners entered their best designs for the chance to win a hand-pained Honda Civic, which was branded as the ultimate fan mobile. The band chose their favourite design, and voila, one lucky fan scored a decked out new car. As far as we can see, the vehicle hasn’t been spotted since 2016, leaving us with many questions - where is the car now? What is the resale value on a one-of-a-kind 1D vehicle? The list goes on.
Megan The Stallion’s Stocks
In partnership with CashApp, Megan Thee Stallion gave away $1million USD in stocks to random winners this year. The #CashAppForHotties giveaway was part of the company’s financial literacy campaign and saw users win shares in stocks like Peloton, Microsoft, and Netflix. CashApp users could enter the competition by commenting their username on this tweet, which included the ‘Investing For Hotties’ tutorial - an introduction to stocks from Megan Thee Stallion.
Whether it’s a tattoo, a car or potentially life-changing stocks, there’s many different ways to incorporate prizes and incentives into artist campaigns. They don’t have to be that drastic either - but it’s always worth thinking outside the box to find prizes that will pique fans’ interest.
Last year we saw plenty of artists jumping on the fast food bandwagon. From Travis Scott, to Megan Thee Stallion, Saweetie and Mariah Carey - musicians in the US were linking their names to some of the country's most loved franchises.
